Ok, here's the thing. I keep receiving popups warning me about spyware and malware crap on my computer (They may have been fake warnings, but I didn't want to take that chance). My current security program expired, so I went to download a few new spyware and virus protections, but they said I had to register to use them, so I had them removed from my computer as well.
Then I remembered a thing called Spybot, which I had installed on my last computer. However, when I downloaded it onto my current computer, every time I opened it up, it restarted my computer automatically, so I quickly removed it.
I've also been warned about fake protection programs that do the opposite of what the real thing is suppose to do. Anyone know of any effective FREE anti-spyware, malware, virus protection, etc. programs that I can download, and how can I tell the fake from the real thing?

I switched over to Windows Defender last week since my last virus protection slowed my computer down. It works great, too. You should already have it installed since it comes with every windows computer {I think}. Just go to Start, All Programs, Windows Defender.
If you don't have it, then go to Microsoft.com, locate it, and download it. Hope it works for you if your willing to give it a try!

I turned it on the other day. Thanks Shadow Dragon, but now I have another problem. I just received a notification saying that someone is trying to hack into my computer or something using some sort of software, and unlike those other popups, it appeared on the corner of my computer where the clock and stuff are, so I know it's not fake. Should I be worried or will Windows Defender take care of that, too?

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't click on it just in case. Sometimes, popups come up on my computer saying that you've been infected with this and that, and telling you to buy their anti-virus, Trojan, etc. software, and sometimes, Like you mentioned on your first post, they turn out to be fake products that can actually spread more spyware and crap that can damage your computer more.
If a popup shows up and it scans your computer, and they have details of the scan, showing the infections and stuff, and you don't remember installing a software like that, then that's fake as well, so I'd keep an eye out for that.

Yeah, I read about that. So far, since I've turned Windows Defender on, I haven't had any trouble.
